Umpiring

Regardless of your age, ability or experience of playing hockey, if you’re interested, then umpiring could be for you!

Compensation

For EACH MATCH you umpire, we provide expenses of £20.

People’s reasons for ‘taking up the whistle’ vary. For example, you might wish to:

  • Support the junior section in the club
  • Meet people and make friends through the social side of the game
  • Support your friends and family who play
  • Improve as a player by learning more about the rules and their interpretation

But how can being an Umpire help your personal development?

  • Leadership Skills (including for DoE)
  • Improve your understanding of the rules
  • Build your confidence
  • Develop your interpersonal and communication skills
  • Develop team work with your umpiring colleagues

How to Become an Umpire

It isn’t as daunting as you might think - there are different skill levels that you can work your way through and there is lots of support, with opportunities to observe some games and watch experienced umpires in the company of another umpire so that you can discuss decision making whilst watching the game.

Step 1

Register (for free) on the England Hockey website by clicking this link.

Step 2

Use the free online rules quiz to check/improve your knowledge and test yourself. You can save your progress and complete it in stages.

Step 3

After completing the rules test you can choose to do the Level 1 umpires course.

There are lots of dates available (check them here) and it is completed as a two-hour Zoom evening session (19.30 to 21.30).

Step 4

After some practice, and when you feel ready, we can assess you to become a Level 1 assessed umpire.

Cost

NOTHING, if you umpire for the club!

Initial outlay for the Level 1 umpire course is £30 and we'll give you that back once you've umpired your first match.
